nullDC, possibly the best, if not one of the Sega Dreamcast emulators available for Windows has had some news posted by its developers:

Project: Encounter Zone, a homebrew Dreamcast game, is now available for download as a playable engine demo. You can get the selfbootable CD image at this location. The game is unfinished, as it still needs new graphics added, enemy AI tweaks, and other work done. The concept hasn’t been finalized as of yet, but I’m looking to making it a character-based game with a theme (maybe) other than space. A readme is included that explains the gameplay and controls. Gameplay comments are appreciated.

THIS Version:
# Speed is good but not perfect, sometimes the emu could slow down for a while, for this reason I recommend disabling CD audio.
# you can get more speed disabling sound, but you can only do it one time for running emu and after loading any game.
# Many option in Gui are disabled or unoperative, as soon as I had more time this would be solved.
ToDo:
# Savestate would be sooner full active, now savestates are too big for vmu.
# More speed

Lots of new changes have been added to the game. There are now level transitions that award chain bonuses per level, and some neat mode7 effects that take place per level change. I’ve added some new graphics, but since I’m having to take care of the graphics myself, they’re still placeholders until I get to grips with the freeware Anim8or modelling program. Once I get familiar with texturing and rotating the models, the graphics will change once again. I’ll probably stick to using primitives, as I like the feel that they give the game. I’ve done lots of code cleanup and some optimizations to make things run a lot smoother. Here’s a current screenshot of the game in action:

There’s still a lot to do. I’m currently taking a break from the graphics and concentrating on finishing up the gameplay elements. I’ve got some more levels to finish and some minor holes to fill in, then I’ll move on to finishing up the graphics and then paste everything together with an ‘attract mode’ with instructions, high score table, and other tidbits. I’ve decided to release the game for the Dreamcast and Gamepark handhelds simultaneously, with an emphasis on the strengths of each platform.
Crystals of Xaz is a Fenix for Dreamcast game that I’ve been developing for about a month now. The goal is to fly to various planets, and capture crystals to fuel your home planet while avoiding falling enemies and other dangers. There are powerups and other bonuses that are available to help you on your quest. The game is about 40% done at this stage. Here is an early screenshot with placeholder graphics:
Once the game is finished, I’ll be releasing it as freeware for the Dreamcast (as a selfbootable disc image) and the source code so that others may learn from my experiences.
For those who don’t know about Fenix, it’s a scripting language developed specifically for games, that runs a bytecode file in a “sandbox” similar to how Java works. Fenix has been ported to the Gamepark handhelds, Dreamcast, PC, Mac, Linux, and other platforms.
