Amiga Emulators
Amiga emulators have come a long way since I first discovered them in 1996. UAE was the first Amiga emulator, originally for Linux. UAE was originally called the Unusable Amiga Emulator, due to it not being able to boot. In its early stages, it was known as Unix Amiga Emulator and later with other names as well. Since none of the popular expansions fit any more, the acronym no longer stands for anything, and the software is simply known as UAE — this occasionally gets backronymed as Universal Amiga Emulator. Today, UAE is easily tbe best Amiga emulator for any platform its available for. WinUAE, the windows port of this emulator is one of the more complete emulators for you will find for ANY system. WinUAE has reasonable compatibility and speed for most software but, just like a “real” Amiga, for some old games WinUAE will require careful configuration in order to match the originally-supported hardware. For example, 68000 code could cause an exception on an emulated 68040, just like it would perhaps do on an Amiga 4000/040. The Amiga (At the time was called the Commodore Amiga) was my first “journey” if you will into the 16bit world. In 1987 when I got my Amiga 1000, my systems were the NES and Commodore 64. Some of the great games I remember at the time were Faery Tale, Test Drive, Garrison, Dr. Fruit, etc. Amiga emulators today are virtually perfect. I remember when I used to use BBSes on my Amiga how people were saying that it would be impossible to ever emulate the Amiga’s hardware. (Of course this was back in the late 80’s, early 90s). I guess Toni Wilen and others got the last laugh on them eh? The original Amiga 1000 came with a 68000 CPU running at 7.13 MHz, and 256k of RAM built in (although it was heavily recommended that you get the additional 256k add on so it can have a total of 512k of RAM). Other Amiga computers such as the Amiga 500, Amiga 2000, Amiga 1200, Amiga 4000, etc came with a minimum of 512k of RAM.
